Carlos Correa Takes Significant Step in Rehab for Houston Astros Return

Carlos Correa, the talented third baseman for the Houston Astros, has received the green light to advance in his rehabilitation process following ankle surgery. The announcement came on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment in his journey back to the field this season.

Correa underwent surgery in early May to repair a torn peroneus brevis tendon, a procedure that initially raised concerns about the possibility of him returning to play during the current season. However, after a recent doctor's appointment, he was cleared to intensify his baseball activities. He is set to report to the Astros' minor-league facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, this weekend to begin this next phase of his rehabilitation.

"From the moment I had the surgery, my plan has always been to try to get back and play this year," Correa stated. He expressed optimism about the upcoming activities, emphasizing that this phase will serve as a crucial test to gauge how his foot responds to increased exertion.

In recent weeks, Correa has progressively ramped up his training regimen while rehabbing in Houston. He has been engaging in various drills, including hitting off a pitching machine and fielding ground balls. Currently, he reports that he is sprinting at "95%" capacity. However, significant hurdles remain before he can return to game action, as he has yet to run bases or face live pitching.

"It's going to be change of direction, it's going to be the bases, touching the bases, it's going to be the sliding part, the diving part," Correa elaborated on the challenges ahead. He anticipates that his time in Florida will provide critical insights into his readiness to compete at the major league level.

As of Tuesday, the Astros have 24 games remaining in the regular season, which raises questions about the feasibility of Correa's return this year. His potential comeback could be crucial, especially if the Astros secure a postseason berth. They currently hold a two-game lead in the American League West over the Texas Rangers, which adds to the urgency of his rehabilitation.

Correa acknowledged that the possibility of returning solely for a playoff run is being considered, stating, "we're weighing all the options." Astros manager Joe Espada is cautious about making any predictions regarding Correa's timeline but noted that his progression to Florida is a positive development. "We’ve still got to make sure that we check all the boxes... But this is really encouraging," Espada remarked.

A potential return for Correa also raises questions about how the Astros will manage their lineup. Espada indicated that if Correa is cleared to play, he will resume his role at third base. Correa himself has made it clear that he would not return unless he can contribute defensively, stating, "I don’t think I’m a better DH than Yordan Alvarez."

Since Correa's injury, Isaac Paredes has stepped up as the regular third baseman and has been one of the team's most productive hitters. Should Correa return, the Astros will need to navigate how to keep Paredes in the lineup, as he has also shown versatility by playing at first and second base. Espada mentioned that he has not yet considered the specific roster adjustments that may be necessary as Correa progresses.
