The inaugural weekend of the Texas high school football season brought excitement and drama, featuring impressive victories, record-breaking performances, and notable individual achievements across the Houston area. As teams kicked off their campaigns, several players and programs made headlines, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating season.
One of the standout teams was Crawford, which made a strong statement in its first game as a Class 5A program. The Chargers dominated La Porte, winning 51-24 against a Bulldogs squad that was ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 5A Division I. Crawford's offense was relentless, racking up 242 rushing yards, while Mississippi commit Alvin Mosley showcased his versatility with 213 receiving yards and four total touchdowns, including a punt return score. Following a successful 12-2 season in Class 4A, the Chargers are poised to make an impact in their new classification.
Other Houston powerhouses also made their mark with statement victories. Katy, Shadow Creek, and Ridge Point all emerged victorious against formidable opponents. Katy defeated No. 11 Atascocita 28-17, with Caleb Ritter leading the defense with three interceptions and quarterback Mason Hartwell contributing nearly 200 rushing yards. Shadow Creek built an early 21-0 lead and secured a 24-14 win over No. 5 Summer Creek, thanks to Tavis Coleman's impressive 323 passing yards and three touchdowns. Ridge Point edged out No. 10 Dickinson in a nail-biting 29-26 road win, highlighted by Brody Bartee's 417 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
Defending Class 6A Division I state champions North Shore continued their dominance, opening their title defense with a convincing 35-0 shutout of Lancaster. The Mustangs, ranked No. 2 in the state, relied on the leadership of senior quarterbacks Darrell Haynes and Ja'Voris Taylor. North Shore will face a challenging out-of-state opponent next, as they prepare to take on John Curtis Christian from River Ridge, Louisiana.
In a remarkable display of offensive power, C.E. King scored 70 points in a lopsided 70-10 victory over Conroe. The Panthers amassed an impressive 641 yards of total offense, with new starting quarterback Khylan Davis throwing for 272 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a score. This performance marked the third time since last season that C.E. King has reached the 70-point mark, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most explosive offenses in the Houston area.
Several Houston-area programs also celebrated significant milestones, with Cleveland and Morton Ranch ending lengthy losing streaks. Cleveland's 26-11 victory over Spring Woods snapped a 36-game skid, while Morton Ranch's 22-0 shutout of Cypress Creek marked their first shutout in eight years. The Mavericks' defense was particularly impressive, forcing six turnovers and allowing just 165 total yards.
Lake Creek's offense shone brightly in their 52-34 win against Bastrop, with junior quarterback Asher Ryan setting new program records by completing 27 of 36 passes for 431 yards and five touchdowns. His performance included record-setting completions and passing yards, while Chance Miller's 263 receiving yards also set a school record.
In other thrilling matchups, Bridgeland and Mayde Creek delivered dramatic finishes. Bridgeland overcame a 30-21 deficit against The Woodlands to win 31-30, thanks to Kash Schwab's fourth touchdown and a last-second field goal. Meanwhile, Mayde Creek triumphed over Elkins in double overtime, winning 38-35 with a clutch touchdown catch from Chad Nelson.
