Chicago Bears' Ben Johnson Discusses Rome Odunze's Role After Injury Recovery

As the Chicago Bears gear up for the 2026 NFL season, wide receiver Rome Odunze is starting to emerge as a pivotal figure in their offensive strategy. Despite the spotlight often shining on other stars like quarterback Caleb Williams and fellow receivers Colston Loveland and Luther Burden, Odunze's journey back from a broken foot has drawn significant attention this offseason.

Odunze, who recorded an impressive 44 receptions for 661 yards and six touchdowns in 2025, faced a challenging recovery after sustaining a foot injury that affected his performance late in the season. In June, he shared insights into his rehabilitation, stating, “It’s not from a standpoint that I’m like always in pain, but the way my foot broke, there’s calluses in there that creates a different type of foot structure with those bones — different things that kind of shifts things around. So my new normal was kind of what I am going into.” This candid reflection highlights the physical adjustments he has had to make, but he remains optimistic about his ability to contribute on the field.

Despite some media narratives suggesting that Odunze may never fully return to his pre-injury form, he confidently asserted, “I don’t think that’s anything that’s going to prohibit me or keep me from making plays.” His determination to overcome the injury is a testament to his resilience and competitive spirit.

Head coach Ben Johnson recently addressed the media, emphasizing Odunze's integral role within the Bears' offense. He referred to Odunze as “Mr. Consistency,” acknowledging the discussions surrounding the receiver's foot injury but asserting, “you didn’t see any setback from that regard. I thought he looked completely healthy.” Johnson's comments reflect the coaching staff's confidence in Odunze's ability to perform at a high level, which is crucial as the Bears aim to build on their successes from the previous season.

Odunze's potential was evident early in the 2025 season when he scored five touchdowns in the first four weeks, showcasing his ability to make impactful plays. Although his injury cut that momentum short, Johnson believes that Odunze will once again be a focal point in their offensive scheme for the upcoming season. “I showed a highlight of him to the team just the other day…cracking one of the safeties in the joint practice [with the Tennessee Titans],” Johnson remarked. “He’s doing all the little things, the things that maybe other people don’t notice, and the coaching staff is very appreciative of because it’s going to help us win games. He’s going to be a key cog in what we do.”

While other players may be garnering more media attention, Odunze's consistent performance and work ethic could soon place him back in the conversation among the Bears' top offensive threats. As the season approaches, the team is optimistic about his contributions, especially as they look to solidify their status as serious contenders in the league.

In addition to Odunze's recovery, Johnson also noted a shift in mentality from quarterback Caleb Williams, who was recently ranked No. 51 on the NFL Top 100 list for 2026. Johnson described Williams as a more composed player this season, contrasting his previous demeanor with a newfound seriousness that reflects the Bears' overall transformation into a legitimate Super Bowl contender. This evolution within the team, coupled with Odunze's recovery, sets the stage for an exciting season ahead for the Chicago Bears.
