Paul Goldschmidt doesn’t need to play every day to perform.
In fact, the 38-year-old veteran “could sit on bench for a month” and still come up big when needed, according to Yankees legend David Cone.
After not playing for a week while Luis Garcia Jr. took over first base duties against right-handed starters, Goldschmidt got his moment against the Boston Red Sox and their bevy of left-handers.
On Sunday, Goldschmidt was arguably the offensive hero of a 16-1 rout, knocking a two-run single up the middle in the fifth inning that made it 2-0 and then hitting a solo homer in the nine-run eighth inning that broke the game open. He finished 3-of-6 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.
For Monday’s series opener between the Yankees and the Angels, the over/under is sitting at 8 total runs on BetMGM. Our in-depth BetMGM Sportsbook review provides a reliable guide on how to use their platform.
“The guy could sit on the bench for a month and show up against a left-handed pitcher and do that,” Cone said on the YES Network after Goldschmidt’s home run, the second of back-to-back long balls following one by Austin Wells, who would go on to have a second homer in the eighth.
Goldschmidt is batting .248 on the season with 18 homers and 48 RBI. He remains a vital piece off the bench with the addition of Garcia Jr.
“Yeah, he’s just got a great approach, great hitter, does a good job of really controlling the zone against them,” manager Aaron Boone told Meredith Marakovits of YES: “He’s outstanding at having a plan for each one he’s going to face. He can hit the ball with authority the other way, which helps, but yeah he continues to be excellent against [left-handers].”
