Headlined by the trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the 2026 offseason has been a big one for the Miami Heat. They have built a team that could compete at the highest level of the Eastern Conference. Aside from the big names, they have also found some ways to close the gap with their backups.

One of them is the latest free agent signing, Nick Richards. After stints with the Charlotte Hornets, the Phoenix Suns, and the Chicago Bulls, it seems Richards has found a new home with the Heat. He signed a one-year contract that should motivate him to work hard and contribute.

Throughout his NBA career, Richards has been a steady big man who can be relied on to play some good minutes. He can start games here and there, but he is most effective as the backup center. With the Heat, he could have that chance if he does well with what the coaching staff gives him.

Bam Adebayo is the established top center for the Heat. At the same time, Bobby Portis can also play at the center spot when Adebayo sits down. That leaves Richards as the third option at center, and he can play some good minutes, especially since Portis can slide down to the power forward position.

Richards can serve as a reliable backup because he is efficient when he gets the ball in the paint. He is also a reliable shot blocker, which is something the Heat need whenever Adebayo or Antetokounmpo have to sit down and take a breather. Richards knows what kind of pressure he will be under, and he is ready for the opportunity in Miami.

"I think that the way that the Heat has been known for, guys that play physical, guys that play hard and play that play their role, I feel like that’s for me. I just keep doing that every single day that I’ll just be, I’ll be fine. Me and Spo, we’ve talked a little bit," Richards said via Ira Winderman. 

"Right now, it’s more, more of a just come in and get great energy every single day, try to be the hardest working on the floor, just try to push myself, push my teammates, be the best teammate as possible."

As long as Richards knows what kind of role he will play, he will be prepared to make a difference. With a good group of players, the Heat have a chance to compete, and Richards will be ready to contribute whenever Erik Spoelstra calls his name.
