After three years and seemingly endless amount of second chances as our starting goalkeeper, Robert Sánchez got exactly one chance from new manager Xabi Alonso. No less, no more.

Those 90 minutes at Craven Cottage were more than enough for Alonso to make up his mind, especially with a perfectly available Emiliano Martínez just sitting there and doing absolutely nothing other than trying to come up with new ways to annoy the opposition. Chelsea moved quickly to sign the veteran World Cup-winning goalkeeper, while keeping young Mike Penders in the backup role.

Fortunately for all involved, Sánchez was able to just as quickly find a new home for himself, too — at least temporarily — with his loan move to Cesc Fàbregas’s Como 1907 made official today. He will reunite there with former teammate Trevoh Chalobah (who joined earlier this window), who I’m sure will be perfectly delighted.

“Robert brings experience at the highest level and qualities that suit the way we want to play. He is a strong goalkeeper with a big presence, but he is also very comfortable with the ball and can help us build from the back. We are very happy to welcome him to Como.”

Yeah, “comfort” is not a word I’d associate with Sánchez.

Good luck, Bob, Trev, and Cesc.

Como 1907 is pleased to announce the signing of Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sánchez on loan from @ChelseaFC until the end of the 2026/27 season.
