Broward County Showcase winners: These 10 football recruits turned heads

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A five-star prospect put together a performance worthy of the MVP award, a Notre Dame commit made history and several of the nation’s top recruits delivered on a big stage as some of the best high school football talent in the country descended on South Florida for the Broward County Showcase.

The showcase featured a loaded collection of nationally ranked teams and elite prospects, with several players making their presence felt in marquee matchups. From game-changing performances on both sides of the ball to record-setting moments and statement games, a handful of players stood out above the rest.

Here are 10 of the top performers from the Broward County Showcase:

MVP: A'mir Sears, Miami Columbus (FL) ATH

There's not much else to be said about a five-star prospect who is trending towards being the top player in his class despite reclassifying. Sears, who was named to USA TODAY Sports preseason All-America team, had a Travis Hunter-like game, catching five passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns, all while adding three interceptions on defense. His efforts were the reason why Columbus upset the then-No. 2 team in the country in Bishop Gorman (NV), which was a 33-28 game. It wasn't as close as the score indicated though, as the Explorers led 33-15 deep into the fourth quarter.

Jayden Carey, St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) DB

The three-star Ohio State commit made his presence felt in the first half, reading a pass play all the way and getting a pick-six to help the No. 6 Raiders beat up on No. 22 DeSoto (TX), 38-14.

Zayden Gamble, St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) DB

The Notre Dame commit was delivering the boom all night long against No. 22 DeSoto (TX), but made his biggest play on special teams, where he took a fumbled punt return 65 yards to the house in a 38-14 beatdown of the Eagles.

Asher Ghioto, Bolles (FL) EDGE

The five-star edge rusher who named to USA TODAY Sports preseason All-America team was relentless against Archbishop McCarthy (FL), logging 8 tackles (3 for loss) with two sacks and six quarterback hurries in a 21-14 win.

Julius Jones, St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) WR

The Notre Dame commit made history on national television, becoming St. Thomas Aquinas's all-time leading receiver with 1,897 yards and counting on a slant pass that went for a touchdown. Jones broke the prior record held by Cameron Benson, which has stood since 1979.

Neimann Lawrence, American Heritage (FL) QB

The 4-star Texas commit had a key bounce-back game after a season-opening 24-7 loss to West Boca Raton (FL), completing 28 of 43 passes for 371 yards with four touchdowns in a 35-28 overtime win over East St. Louis (IL).

Kai Moore, Columbus (FL) QB

Played a clean game against the No. 2 team in the country, completing 18 of 28 passes for 236 yards with four passing touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Jaxsen Stokes, Sierra Canyon (CA) RB

Stokes, a Cal commit who was named to the West Region ALL-USA preseason team, proved why he's going to play for Tosh Lupoi's Bears, rushing for 177 yards and adding 51 yards receiving and a touchdown in a convincing 24-7 win over Chaminade-Madonna (FL).

Michael Stringer, American Heritage (FL) WR

The Western Kentucky commit had a field day against the East St. Louis secondary, catching nine passes for 209 yards with three touchdowns, including the game-winner, in a 35-28 overtime win over the Flyers.

Brysen Wright, Mandarin (FL) WR

The five-star product and preseason All-America second-teamer had a season debut to remember, catching three passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, all while adding an interception and four tackles on defense, one of which was a TFL.
