If the Detroit Pistons or Miami Heat intend to make a trade for future Hall of Famer Kyrie Irving during next season’s NBA trade deadline, a new report offers fresh details on the expected cost.
This has been another wild offseason in the NBA, as quite a few stars changed locations via the trade market. Elite talent like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, LaMelo Ball, and Kawhi Leonard were all moved this summer. One name that popped up in several trade rumors but did not change location is Irving.
The Dallas Mavericks guard missed all of last season to recover from a torn ACL he suffered midway through the previous campaign. Because of his resume as a nine-time All-Star and one-time champion, it’s understandable why some teams would take the risk on him when the value of the 34-year-old with balky knees is at a low.
However, new Mavs President Masai Ujiri has turned away all phone calls because he wants to see how Irving plays with the new face of their franchise, 2025-26 Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg. But he also knows that if Irving returns and looks pretty close to the superstar before his season-ending injury, he could get far more back in a potential trade with the Pistons and Heat — two clubs linked to an Irving trade this summer.

“If he comes back and he is scoring 24, 25 points (per game), then you will have teams willing to give up a first-round pick for him. Maybe more, maybe a young player, too. But with his injury history, I don’t think you give up more than one first.”
– Western Conference executiveBeyond the risk of taking an aging player who has had injury woes during his career, Deveney notes that Irving has a $42 million player option after next season. A lot of contending teams would hope he opts out to take a new multi-year deal for less annually. Which means agreeing to a handshake deal with a mercurial individual.
Nevertheless, Irving, playing close to his peak levels, is a star who can make a huge difference. NBA fans just saw it a few years ago when he was on the Mavericks team that reached the Finals in 2024.
