A huge transformation at St James’ Park, changes in personnel, both on and off the pitch.
After a stressful summer it was a relief to actually get back to watching the football, although that of course could have simply heightened even further the stress levels for those who care about Newcastle United.
Gary Neville giving his opinion after the first week of NUFC action: *“Matthias Jaissle was gutted last week with that 96th minute [penalty] goal from Liverpool, you could see it on his face and naturally so. His team had done so well. I was pleasantly surprised. I went up to St James’ Park last week thinking there was going to be turmoil and never expected them to do what they did against Liverpool, and then on Saturday [against Tottenham], it was fantastic.”*
Newcastle United under Matthias Jaissle kicking off with two wins and a draw, as West Brom were also defeated in midweek in the Carabao Cup.
The Sky Sports pundit going on to add: “I am really happy for Yoane Wissa… he is a fantastic player and we have seen in this last week what he can be and what he can do. It is great news for Newcastle United. They have signed a couple of players and things are picking up a little bit for them in terms of confidence for the manager and the players. They will have come together and they’ll get a big energy and spirit boost out of that.”
Gary Neville reflecting back on what the mood was like earlier this summer: “I am sure the players will have been asking questions a few weeks ago, with Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Kieran Trippier, Eddie Howe all leaving, massive parts of the recent Newcastle team and squad and management. I am happy for Newcastle United, well done to them.”
So many people had predicted zero points from what looked a very tough couple of opening fixtures.
Having now made such a positive start to the season, it is now down to Matthias Jaissle and the Newcastle United players (and fans!) to do everything they can to now build on it.
With Matias Fernandez-Pardo set to be announced as Newcastle United’s eighth summer signing on Tuesday, it is great to see the club not just sitting back after a trio of positive performances and results.
