Official: Barcelona confirm 20-year-old midfielder’s first-team registration; given No. 4 shirt

Barcelona have made a major decision on Brian Farinas’ future by officially registering the young midfielder as a first-team player for the 2026/27 season.

The club confirms that Farinas will wear the No. 4 shirt, which had been left vacant since Ronald Araujo moved to Liverpool on loan, after the documentation for his registration was signed on Monday afternoon and his status was updated in the league.

It is important to note that the midfielder’s situation had changed dramatically during the transfer window.

In fact, Girona had advanced towards a deal that would have seen them acquire 50 per cent of his rights for around €1.5 million, but the move was stopped after Hansi Flick intervened.

Flick changes the course of Farinas’ future

Flick wanted to see Farinas himself before Barcelona sanctioned his departure, and the decision proved important almost immediately.

Once the midfielder began working under the German coach, his performances in training made a strong impression

Flick saw qualities that could potentially allow Farinas to contribute to the first team, turning a transfer that had looked increasingly likely into one that was eventually parked.

Barcelona sporting director Deco also played a role in assessing the midfielder’s situation. A few weeks ago, he met with Farinas’ agent to discuss the player’s future.

During that meeting, Deco communicated the club’s satisfaction with Farinas’ development and reinforced the positive impression he had made on Flick in training.

The scale of the change is striking, as Farinas began the market close to joining Girona and now finds himself officially registered with Barcelona’s senior squad.

That does not mean his route into the team will be straightforward, as competition for places remains intense and the midfielder understands opportunities may be limited.

What has impressed Barcelona, though, is how he has responded to the situation.

Farinas has continued working in the same manner without showing frustration or allowing the uncertainty surrounding his future to affect him.
