The NFL's 53-man roster deadline for the 2026 season has passed, resulting in over 1,000 players being released, at least temporarily. As is customary during this period, several high-profile cuts have caught the attention of fans and analysts alike, particularly those involving players with significant recognition or draft pedigree.
Among the most notable names released is quarterback Will Levis of the Tennessee Titans. Drafted in the second round in 2023, Levis struggled to find his footing in the NFL, ending his tenure with a disappointing 5-16 record over 21 starts. He completed 61% of his passes, amassing 3,899 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. After missing the entire 2025 season due to a shoulder injury, the Titans opted to sign veteran Mitchell Trubisky as a backup to Cam Ward, making Levis's release less surprising.
Another significant cut was that of punter Johnny Hekker, who played for the Minnesota Vikings. A four-time first-team All-Pro, Hekker has had a distinguished 14-season career in the NFL. However, he was unable to secure a spot on the roster, losing the punter job to undrafted rookie Brett Thorson. With an average of 46.8 yards per punt and 42.7 net yards throughout his career, Hekker is expected to attract interest from teams in need of a punter.
Running back Jaydon Blue of the Dallas Cowboys was also released, surprising many who thought he had secured the backup position after a solid preseason. Blue, who had 23 carries for 94 rushing yards in two preseason games, was waived alongside fellow 2025 draft pick Phil Mafah, paving the way for veteran Malik Davis to take the role.
Another running back, Jaleel McLaughlin from the Denver Broncos, also found himself on the waiver list. McLaughlin, who has showcased his speed and agility with 1,093 rushing yards and three touchdowns over three seasons, was squeezed out of a crowded backfield that includes J.K. Dobbins and rookie Jonah Coleman.
Defensive tackle Mazi Smith, a first-round pick in 2023, was released by the New York Jets after failing to make an impact, logging no tackles in three games. Smith will now seek a new opportunity as he looks for his third team in four seasons.
Offensive lineman Evan Neal, selected seventh overall in the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, was also released after a lackluster performance that included missing the entire 2025 season due to injury. Despite his struggles, Neal's size and youth may attract interest from other teams looking to bolster their offensive line.
Wide receiver Mecole Hardman of the Buffalo Bills, who caught the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl 58 with the Kansas City Chiefs, was also cut after a brief stint with Buffalo. The team may consider bringing him back for depth on their practice squad.
Lastly, tight end Justin Joly, drafted in the fifth round by the Broncos, was waived despite a standout performance in the preseason finale, where he recorded an 88-yard touchdown reception. Denver may look to retain him on their practice squad if he goes unclaimed.
