Last month, Sophie Cunningham ignited a widespread debate throughout the country after she spoke out against transgender women and girls competing in women’s sports. While opinions on the issue are widely split across party lines, with Democrats siding with trans rights and Republicans wanting to exclude trans athletes, that is not always the case.
Rob Sand is currently the Democratic nominee in the Iowa gubernatorial race. But while he might be a registered Democrat and the Democratic nominee in the Governor’s race, that doesn’t mean he agrees with Democrats on everything, as he took a stand against trans girls in girls’ sports during a recent interview.
Sophie Cunningham’s CommentsDuring an interview for the ESPN profile that was published in July, Cunningham was asked a question about her political views when she took the opportunity to share her views on trans women in women’s sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Cunningham later doubled down on her comments, saying her opinion was “common sense.”
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said last month. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Cunningham has made it clear since then that she has no plans to back away from the backlash surrounding her comments. However, she has also indicated that she would like to turn her attention back toward basketball.
Sand takes a standDuring a recent interview with Jonathan Martin of Politico, Sand, who is running for Iowa Governor as a Democrat, was asked how he differs from other Democrats.
“Well, I have said, consistently, I think that fairness rules the day in girls’ sports,” he said, while listing a few other issues where he disagreed with most Democrats.
“You don’t want biological boys playing in high school girls’ sports?” Martin asked Sand, clarifying the candidate’s stance.
“I just think girls’ sports are for girls, and boys’ sports are for boys,” Sand said. “And I think that that’s fair and reasonable.”
That said, Sand, who has served as the State Auditor for Iowa since 2019, said that he still leans left on a number of other issues.
“At the same time, I respect a woman’s right to choose and reproductive freedom,” Sand said. “If you want to get a gay marriage, help yourself.”
