BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Special Olympics New York hit the greens Tuesday afternoon, bringing more than 50 athletes to Chautauqua for a regional unified golf competition.
The competition kicked off at the Chautauqua Golf Club on Lake Road, where athletes went head-to-head on the course alongside their partners.
One golf coach said these events bring smiles to the athletes' faces like they haven't seen before.
"They look forward to it, they send me messages, they tell me the forecast, they're worried about rain, making sure that it would still happen," Brenda, head coach of the Chautauqua Lakers golf team, said. "The athletes here and the parents, the families, we all have built a community with each other that we wouldn't have found anywhere else because we all live this life and understand, and to watch your child make friends and to be able to participate, it's a beautiful thing."
Special Olympics New York serves more than 45,000 athletes across the state with year-round sports training and athletic competition.
