In an impressive display of talent, Yohandy Morales made a significant impact in his Major League Baseball debut, hitting a home run and recording three hits as the Washington Nationals triumphed over the Atlanta Braves 9-5 on Tuesday night.
The Nationals, who expanded their roster from 26 to 28 players, called up both Morales and pitcher Jared Simpson prior to the game. After striking out in his first at-bat, Morales quickly turned the tide in the third inning with a solo home run, showcasing the power that earned him 25 home runs during his time with Triple-A Rochester this season.
Simpson, making his own debut, entered the game in the fifth inning with the Nationals leading 5-2. He faced a challenging situation with runners on first and second and no outs but managed to induce a double play followed by a flyout, effectively escaping the jam. The 24-year-old then continued to impress by retiring the next six batters he faced, finishing the game with three strikeouts and earning his first win.
The Braves initially took the lead when Ozzie Albies homered in the second inning. However, the Nationals responded decisively by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. CJ Abrams contributed significantly with a two-run single, while Brady House added a two-run double, shifting the momentum in favor of Washington.
Atlanta's Drake Baldwin doubled home a run in the third, but Morales quickly answered back, leading off the bottom of the inning with his home run. The Nationals continued to extend their lead in the seventh, with Morales doubling to start the frame. A throwing error by Braves reliever Brent Suter allowed a run to score, followed by an RBI single from Jacob Young, making the score 8-2.
For the Braves, starting pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver struggled, allowing five runs and six hits over four innings, leading to his first loss of the season. The Braves also called up veteran infielder Kyle Farmer and 25-year-old right-hander Blake Burkhalter, who made his big league debut, allowing one run in the sixth inning.
With this victory, the Nationals improved their standing while the Braves saw their lead in the National League East shrink to 3.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies, who were playing later that night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The teams will meet again on Wednesday, with Grant Holmes (9-5, 3.71 ERA) set to pitch for the Braves against the Nationals' Jackson Kent (1-2, 5.59 ERA).
