Ryan Myers has officially stepped into the role of high school sports reporter for The Commercial Appeal, bringing his enthusiasm and fresh perspective to Memphis. As he embarks on this new journey, Myers expresses his excitement about covering a city rich in culture and sports history. His commitment to providing respectful and fact-based journalism aims to highlight the stories of the community that shapes Memphis.
Although Myers is new to Memphis, he is eager to immerse himself in the city and learn from its residents. Hailing from Sterling, Virginia, he acknowledges that he did not grow up in Memphis but is determined to embrace the unfamiliarity. He invites community members to share their insights, questions, and story ideas, emphasizing his desire to connect with those who know the city best.
Myers’ approach to journalism will extend beyond traditional articles. With a versatile background in video production and social media, he plans to engage with the Memphis audience through dynamic content. He aims to document events and share his experiences on social media, ensuring that his coverage resonates with local sports fans.
Growing up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Myers developed a passion for sports media early on. He participated in various sports during his youth, eventually focusing on basketball and golf. Although he did not play at a collegiate level, his love for sports never waned. After graduating high school in 2022, he moved over 2,000 miles to attend Arizona State University, where he pursued a degree in journalism and mass communications, complemented by a minor in digital audiences.
During his time at ASU, Myers honed his reporting skills, producing content both on air and behind the scenes. He gained valuable experience working for an On3 affiliate, where he covered Sun Devil football and men’s basketball. Following his graduation in May, he furthered his career with an internship at The Dallas Morning News, where he reported on sports in a city known for its rich sporting culture.
Outside of journalism, Myers remains an avid sports enthusiast, frequently playing soccer, basketball, and golf. He also enjoys video games and exploring nightlife, concerts, and local events. The Memphis food scene particularly excites him, and he welcomes recommendations from locals regarding dining and culinary experiences.
Myers recently attended his first high school football game in Memphis, where he witnessed Whitehaven's impressive 43-28 victory over Houston. The vibrant atmosphere of Friday night lights left a lasting impression on him, further fueling his excitement for the season ahead.
