In a commanding display of skill and teamwork, the ninth-ranked Fairfield Trojans triumphed over the Fort Madison Bloodhounds in a girls tennis match, securing an 8-0 victory in doubles and winning all singles matches. This win marks the Trojans' seventh consecutive dual victory this season, maintaining their perfect record in the Southeast Conference with a 6-0 tally.
Ria Ross continues to be a standout player for the Trojans, demonstrating her versatility and prowess in doubles play. Partnering with Aubrey Ryan, Ross achieved her tenth straight doubles win, emphasizing her ability to adapt to different partners throughout the season. Their match against Bloodhound duo Lucille Zimmerman and Mikah Washington was a testament to their synergy, culminating in an 8-0 scoreline.
“Aubrey and I worked so well together,” Ross commented after the match. “We communicated well. I felt like every point was well deserved with the way she placed the ball and the forehand shots I could hit.” This partnership not only highlights Ross's skill but also marks a significant milestone for Ryan, who secured her first varsity doubles victory. Just days earlier, Ryan celebrated her inaugural varsity singles win against Keokuk’s Remi Sanchez, showcasing her rapid development in the sport.
Ross's impressive performance extended beyond doubles, as she also claimed victory in the No. 2 singles match against Washington, winning 8-0. This follows her recent success in the No. 2 doubles title at the Dan Staggs Invitational, where she partnered with Soumya Mallick. Over the past three seasons, Ross has played alongside five different partners, qualifying for state tournaments and earning accolades, including a seventh-place state medal last fall with Sriya Yammanur.
“We’re all very close as a team, so I feel like that makes it easier to connect with a new partner,” Ross explained. “I’ve played with some very different players over the years. Even though we all work so differently, it’s a matter of having great communication. You can get through anything and win any point you really desire.” This strong team dynamic has been crucial to the Trojans’ success this season.
In addition to Ross and Ryan’s achievements, Natalie Steele, who had missed the previous weekend’s Dan Staggs Invitational due to volleyball commitments, returned to the court with a dominant 9-0 victory in the top singles match against Zimmerman. Other Trojans, including Yammanur, Faeven Gebremariam, Mareyn, and Kinzley Dunkin, also contributed to the team's success with 8-0 wins in both singles and doubles matches against the Bloodhounds.
Steele expressed her enthusiasm for returning to tennis, stating, “I was missing tennis a little bit on Saturday. I love these girls so much. I’ve played with all of them so long, but I love volleyball too. So no matter where I was playing, I knew I was going to enjoy the day.”
Looking ahead, the Fairfield Trojans will continue their season with a match against Mount Pleasant on Thursday, with the Southeast Conference dual set to begin at 4:30 p.m. As they aim to maintain their undefeated streak, the Trojans are poised to further establish their dominance in the league.
