On September 1, the Mitchell High School boys golf team faced a competitive field at the Hub City Invitational held at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen. The team secured a tie for 12th place, finishing with a total score of 317, marking their second-best team performance of the season.
Despite the solid score, Mitchell found themselves trailing behind the top teams in the tournament. Sioux Falls Lincoln and O'Gorman both finished with impressive scores of 294, leading to a tiebreaker situation. Lincoln emerged victorious in the tiebreaker due to the performance of their sixth golfer, who outperformed O'Gorman's sixth player, solidifying their top position.
The individual medalist title was claimed by Harper Schnabel from Aberdeen Roncalli, who delivered an outstanding performance with a score of 3-under-par 68. Schnabel's round included five birdies, showcasing his skill, particularly on the back nine where he shot 2-under-par. Following closely were Trevor Rick from Sioux Falls Jefferson, Cole Jansen of Rapid City Stevens, and Max Stemwedel from Watertown, all of whom finished at 1-under-par 70. Lucas Daggett, also from Roncalli, rounded out the top five with an even-par score of 71.
Leading the way for the Kernels was senior golfer Asher Dannenbring, who finished in 25th place with a score of 4-over-par 75. Dannenbring's performance was crucial for the team, as he navigated the challenging course effectively. Freshman Eli Konrad also made a notable contribution, achieving a season-best score of 79 and finishing in 48th place. Ian Weber improved his own season record with a score of 80, placing him in 55th.
The remaining members of the Mitchell team included Jordan Meyerink, who shot an 83 and finished 72nd, Parker Rauscher with a score of 86 in 81st place, and Dayton Adams, who ended the day with a score of 91, placing him 88th. The team's performance at the Hub City Invitational highlighted both individual talents and areas for improvement as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
Looking ahead, the Mitchell boys golf team will have a break from competition before returning to the course on September 11 for the Yankton Invitational at Hillcrest Country Club. This upcoming event will provide another opportunity for the Kernels to refine their skills and improve their standings in the season.
In addition to the varsity competition, Mitchell's junior varsity boys golf team participated in the Watertown Invitational on September 1, where they achieved a commendable third place finish. The JV team shot a total of 318, with Watertown taking first place at 307 and Brandon Valley following at 315 in a 13-team event.
