TCU football is moving closer to its 2026 season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland on Aug. 29. As the Countdown to Kickoff continues, we’ll highlight a former Horned Frog whose jersey number coincided with the number of days remaining until the opener. At No. 1 is former TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston!
“QJ” signed with the Horned Frogs as a four-star prospect and one of the highest-ranked recruits in program history. His promise lived up to the hype, as he totaled 2,190 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns over just three seasons in Fort Worth. As a freshman, Johnston reeled in 22 catches for 487 yards and two scores while helping TCU to a 6-4 record and an invitation to the Texas Bowl, which was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19.
Johnston’s career season came in 2022, when he brought in a career-high 60 catches for 1,069 yards and six touchdowns while guiding the Horned Frogs to a 13-2 record, a trip to the Big 12 title game and a Fiesta Bowl win over Michigan. Johnston went for 163 yards and a touchdown on six catches and was named the Offensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl matchup. Johnston, a First-Team All-Big 12 selection over the 2021 and 2022 seasons, was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with their first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Since beginning his professional career, Johnston has made 46 apperances with 31 starts. He’s caught 144 passes for 1,877 yards and 18 touchdowns, 16 of which have come over the last two seasons. The 24-year-old is entering his fourth season with the Chargers, who picked up Johnston’s fifth-year option earlier this year.
