The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the 2026-27 NFL season with a roster that has sparked considerable interest, particularly regarding their quarterback situation. With Aaron Rodgers, a seasoned veteran and future Hall of Famer, leading the charge, questions arose about who would accompany him on the 53-man roster. The Steelers recently confirmed that they would carry four quarterbacks, including Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Drew Allar.
Mason Rudolph, a familiar face for the Steelers, was a predictable choice. Drafted in 2018, Rudolph brings experience and a solid understanding of the game. However, the inclusion of both Will Howard and Drew Allar caught many by surprise, as it is uncommon for teams to carry four quarterbacks. Nevertheless, Rodgers welcomed the decision, emphasizing the talent of his fellow quarterbacks.
“If the best 53 are going to make it, … I think those four are part of the best 53. So, I’m happy for all of those guys,” Rodgers stated, reflecting on the team's roster decisions.
Both Howard and Allar showcased their potential during the preseason, which played a significant role in the Steelers' decision to keep them. Howard, a second-year player from Kansas State and Ohio State, faced challenges in his rookie season due to injuries. This preseason, he made a notable impact, helping to drive the offense against the Green Bay Packers and throwing two touchdown passes against the Buffalo Bills.
Drew Allar, selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, also had an impressive showing. He threw for 153 yards against the Packers, including two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. His performance in preseason games against the Jets and Bills further solidified his position on the roster.
Rodgers, who signed a one-year contract to return to the Steelers, is in what many speculate could be his final NFL season. While his future beyond this year remains uncertain, he is optimistic about the prospects of Howard and Allar. He noted, "Looking to the future, those other three guys are going to have a chance when I’m gone. With the growth you saw with Will, and obviously with Drew being drafted so high but also playing well in camp, I’m not surprised at all, and I’m excited about those guys’ future.”
The Steelers' decision to retain four quarterbacks reflects their commitment to building depth at the position, especially with an aging Rodgers at the helm. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the development of Howard and Allar will be crucial not only for their immediate success but also for the future of the franchise.
