Aeneas Peebles explains why he ignores Ravens roster projections

The time to evaluate the preseason roster is coming to an end. The Baltimore Ravens have spent the past several weeks evaluating talent. Players have spent the same period trying to prove they belong. At this stage of the preseason, roster construction becomes its own sport. Fans study depth charts. Analysts project 53-man rosters. Reporters debate bubble candidates and practice squad possibilities.

For players living through it, however, that exercise can become dangerous. Nobody understands that better than defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles. The Ravens wrapped up an impressive preseason Friday night with a dominant 41-3 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Baltimore's defense allowed just 13 total points across three exhibition games, continuing a trend that reflected the depth and competition throughout the roster. Peebles has been part of that effort, but when asked afterward whether he had done what he wanted to do given the depth of Baltimore's defensive line room, he revealed a mindset that helps explain how players navigate one of the most stressful periods of the NFL calendar.

Rather than focus on how many spots may be available, Peebles has deliberately avoided thinking about roster projections altogether. He explained that worrying about depth charts and roster math can distract players from the only thing they actually control.

"I try not to think about any of that. You will drive yourself crazy trying to count the numbers and trying to play that game within your head... All of that will just disrupt you from trying to put on tape what you need to put on tape to even make it in this game."

The answer offered a revealing glimpse into the mentality required to survive training camp. Players know the competition exists. They know difficult decisions are coming, but spending energy trying to predict those decisions accomplishes very little. Instead, Peebles has focused on something simpler.

"I just try to go out there [and] play my best brand of football, and God willing, that will be enough."

That approach mirrors the culture Baltimore's coaches have repeatedly emphasized throughout camp. The Ravens have built one of the league's deepest rosters by creating competition at nearly every position. For players fighting for opportunities, that environment can either create anxiety or sharpen focus.

Peebles has clearly chosen the latter. With roster decisions looming, he isn't trying to calculate percentages or count available spots. He's trusting the film, trusting the work, and trusting that what he put on tape will speak louder than any projection ever could. It won't be long until we discover whether his efforts end with a spot on the roster.
