“It’s got the facilities, a large economy and the population,” a separate AFC executive said. “The fanbase there is passionate.
“Traveling there is pretty turnkey at this point, and they have developed the infrastructure in place over the last decade,” an AFC executive said. “You almost don’t need a bye week after playing there.”
Travel concerns, which could complicate an international franchise, may also be less daunting because of the league’s existing experience in London. Executives have noted that traveling to the city has become relatively straightforward, with established transportation and operational infrastructure making international games less disruptive than they might have been in the past.
London still would face major challenges if the league eventually decided to place a permanent team there, including scheduling, travel demands and the complexities of operating across international borders. Even so, its facilities, economy, population, passionate fanbase and established infrastructure make the city one of the strongest international candidates for future expansion.
