Ai Ogura's title challenge has taken a serious hit, with the Trackhouse Aprilia rider having undergone surgery on a fractured left thumb in Barcelona, ruling him out of this weekend's Aragon Grand Prix, according to a Trackhouse statement. The injury happened during training in Japan ahead of the round, and Trackhouse confirmed that when Ogura arrived in Europe, examinations revealed a fracture close to his left thumb serious enough to require an operation. Dr. Mir performed the procedure on Wednesday morning, plating the fracture.
No recovery timeline has been set, which is the crucial detail. Trackhouse said an assessment of Ogura's condition will be made over the coming weekend before a rehabilitation plan is established. The team is hopeful he can return for the San Marino Grand Prix in 15 days, but stopped short of confirming it. "At this stage it is too early to confirm," the statement read. In the meantime, Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori steps in aboard the RS-GP for Aragon, lining up alongside Raul Fernandez, who took a win at Silverstone. "We wish Ai a speedy recovery and are grateful for Lorenzo's agreement to deputise at such short notice," Trackhouse said.
The timing stings given where Ogura sits in the championship after 12 rounds - third, 37 points behind leader Jorge Martin and six points off Marco Bezzecchi. That podium position is precarious, though, with Marc Marquez, Fabio di Giannantonio and Fernandez all within 19 points, meaning Ogura could realistically drop to sixth by the end of the Aragon weekend while watching from the sidelines.
It has been a breakout second MotoGP season for the Japanese rider: he claimed his maiden victory at Assen earlier this year, a result that pushed him firmly into title contention, and backed it up with three further grand prix podiums plus three sprint rostrums. His Silverstone crash marked only his second DNF of the campaign and his first race fall of 2026; he also retired from the US Grand Prix with a podium in sight, sidelined by a technical issue on his Aprilia. There's a cruel pattern here, too, as this is the second year running that Ogura has missed the Aragon round through injury, having sat out the 2025 event with a leg injury.
Ogura's future is already set: he moves to the factory Yamaha squad for 2027, where he will partner current Aprilia rival Jorge Martin in one of the biggest surprises of the rider market. Trackhouse, meanwhile, has retained Fernandez and signed Enea Bastianini to complete its line-up.
