Ajinkya Rahane, the recently retired captain of the Indian cricket team, has signed on as the marquee player for the Amsterdam Flames in the inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). This move comes just days after Rahane announced his retirement from international cricket, marking a new chapter in his career.
The Amsterdam Flames, co-owned by former Australia captain Steve Waugh, are set to make their debut in the ETPL, with Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh taking the helm as captain. The franchise has attracted a number of notable international players, including Steve Smith and Tim David, who will join Rahane in a bid to establish a competitive presence in European cricket.
Rahane's last appearance in international cricket was in July 2023, and he has been a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in the last two seasons. His eligibility to participate in overseas franchise leagues followed his retirement from both international and domestic cricket in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently considering a cooling-off period for players who have recently retired, which may affect future participation in such leagues.
Throughout his career, Rahane has made 195 appearances for India across all formats. His leadership was particularly highlighted during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he led the team to a historic series victory in Australia in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli. In the IPL, Rahane has played a total of 212 matches for various franchises, accumulating 5,367 runs at a strike rate of 125.60, including two centuries and 35 half-centuries. He concluded his IPL journey with a title win for the Chennai Super Kings in 2023 before transitioning to the Kolkata Knight Riders.
In a statement regarding his signing, Waugh praised Rahane, stating, "Ajinkya Rahane represents everything you want in a professional cricketer—skill, resilience, humility, and leadership. His experience and character will be invaluable as we build the Amsterdam Flames into one of Europe's premier cricket clubs." Rahane himself expressed enthusiasm about joining the Flames, emphasizing the potential for cricket in Europe and his desire to contribute to the growth of the sport on the continent.
Rahane stated, "Cricket has given me so much, and I’ve always believed that players have a responsibility to leave the game stronger than they found it. Europe is entering an exciting phase and has the potential to become one of cricket’s most promising frontiers. What impressed me about Amsterdam Flames is the ambition to build something meaningful that creates a lasting impact both on and off the field." His commitment to inspiring the next generation of cricketers and strengthening the sport's future in Europe is evident in his words.
As the Amsterdam Flames prepare for their inaugural season in the ETPL, Rahane's addition to the squad is expected to bring a wealth of experience and leadership that could prove crucial in their quest for success in European cricket.
