Al Michaels appeared to poke fun at President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario during Thursday night’s Patriots-Browns game.
While discussing the view from Cleveland during the Amazon Prime Video broadcast, Michaels referenced Lake Erie before turning his attention toward the changing name of another Great Lake.
“That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie,” Michaels said in a clip shared on X. “We’re not quite sure at this point. But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I’m talking about. Read the news.”
Michaels’ comments came the same day Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” in U.S. government databases.
Trump said the name change was being considered amid the worsening relationship with Canada and argued that the United States did not expect to do much business with Ontario.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the renaming, saying the lake’s historic name, which dates back more than 400 years, remains Lake Ontario “today and forever.”
Michaels, a longtime sportscaster, made the comments during Prime Video’s broadcast of the New England Patriots’ game against the Cleveland Browns. His reference to the naming dispute came as the broadcast discussed the geography around the Great Lakes.
The comments added a moment of humor to a dispute that has become part of the broader trade and political tensions between the United States and Canada.
