Alonso explains why he changed his mind on Enzo Fernandez’s involement against Luton

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso insisted it was his decision and not that of Enzo Fernandez for the Argentine midfielder to be left out against Luton Town.

The midfielder was absent for the 2-0 victory amid links with a move to Manchester City before the transfer deadline, but Alonso said the decision to leave him out was taken jointly by himself and the club.

“Yeah, but we assess individually, collectively what’s the best for the team, for tonight, what was better, for other players that were playing and we take the decision,” Alonso said when asked why he had changed his mind after saying Fernandez would be involved.

“It was a decision from myself and from the club.”

Alonso denied the omission was as a result of Fernandez’s request, insisting the Argentine has continued to train well.

“It’s just because of the game today and we had other players that needed minutes and it was that way,” he added.

“It’s a decision that I took.

“He’s a good professional. He’s training well and I have nothing to say about him. It was just a decision that we had to take, thinking about the game that we’re playing tonight and we’ll see for Sunday.”
