McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has taken a strong stance against the allegations made by Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore, who questioned the integrity of the FIA International Court of Appeal following its decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly's penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix.
The press conference at Monza, typically a platform for team leaders to discuss their strategies and performances, turned contentious as Briatore raised concerns about the independence of one of the judges involved in the hearing. He claimed that the judge had connections to McLaren, suggesting that this relationship compromised the fairness of the proceedings.
Briatore's accusations were pointed, as he described the situation: "What is very strange was the fourth judge in the panel, and one of the judges acted like a prosecutor. The problem is, it’s very linked with the McLaren company, because we have a nice picture of this guy at the speech for the McLaren in 2018 in MSO Beverly Hills." He further elaborated on the judge's ties to McLaren, noting that the team had donated cars to a foundation associated with the judge, which he deemed unfair given the context of the protest against Alpine.
Initially, Stella refrained from directly addressing Briatore's claims, opting instead to refer to McLaren's official statement regarding the matter. He expressed a willingness to discuss the case's outcome but indicated that engaging with the allegations was not appropriate. However, as the conversation progressed, Stella felt compelled to respond more assertively, labeling Briatore's comments as insulting to McLaren's reputation.
Stella emphasized the gravity of the allegations, warning that those who make such claims in a public setting must be prepared to stand by their words. He defended the integrity of the FIA International Court of Appeal, asserting that the hearing was conducted with the utmost professionalism and should not be subjected to unfounded scrutiny.
"I find that this conference is going in this direction quite insulting for McLaren, for the reputation of a team that deserves a lot of respect," Stella stated. He continued, "If anybody makes these kinds of allegations, which seem quite serious, they are gonna have to take the responsibility for what they are saying in a public forum. The hearing, the whole International Court of Appeal was conducted to the highest standards. And we should not question this phase like it’s been done."
