England's cricket selectors have announced that uncapped players Aneurin Donald and Henry Crocombe will join the national team for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. This series includes three T20 matches and three One Day Internationals (ODIs), offering both players a significant opportunity to showcase their talents on an international stage.
Aneurin Donald, who has been a standout performer for Derbyshire, has been included in the 16-player squad for the T20 series. The 29-year-old opener had an impressive run in the Vitality Blast, where he scored 489 runs in 12 matches while captaining the Derbyshire Falcons. His ability to clear the ropes was highlighted by his record of hitting the most sixes in the tournament, totaling 37. Additionally, Donald contributed to the Trent Rockets' journey to the final of The Hundred, although they ultimately fell to the Manchester Super Giants.
On the other hand, 24-year-old Henry Crocombe has earned a spot in the ODI squad after a remarkable performance in the County Championship. Crocombe has taken hat-tricks in his last two matches and has recorded three five-wicket hauls this season, showcasing his potential as a seamer. England men's national selector Marcus North praised both players, stating that they have earned their places through impressive domestic performances. He noted, "Aneurin has had an exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in The Hundred while Henry is a player we have had an eye on all summer."
However, the England squad will be without all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who recently underwent successful knee surgery. Bethell is aiming for a return in the white-ball series against Australia scheduled for November. He sustained his injury during the ODI series against India earlier this summer and has missed subsequent matches, including the Test series against Pakistan. Additionally, he is expected to miss the upcoming ODI tri-series involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
In terms of injuries, batter Phil Salt will also be unavailable due to a right quad injury. Conversely, bowler Jamie Overton has been included in both squads after recovering from a thigh injury that sidelined him during the white-ball series against India.
Notably absent from the squads is Durham seamer Brydon Carse, who has faced scrutiny following a recent incident outside a Derby nightclub. Carse was dropped from the second Test against Pakistan and is currently under investigation for an alleged assault. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that while Carse was available for selection, they felt it was important for him to address the issues stemming from the incident before returning to the team.
The T20 series against Sri Lanka will take place on September 15, 17, and 19, while the ODI series is set for September 22, 24, and 27. These matches will provide both Donald and Crocombe with a chance to make their mark on the international stage as England looks to build momentum ahead of future competitions.
