Angel Reese Addresses Pressure Following A'ja Wilson's Withdrawal from Team USA

As the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup approaches, Team USA faces a significant challenge with the unexpected withdrawal of four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson. Wilson, who has been a cornerstone of the national team, cited health concerns as her reason for stepping back from the competition. Despite this setback, Angel Reese, a forward for the Atlanta Dream, is determined to focus on the players who are present and ready to compete.

Wilson's absence, along with that of Kelsey Plum, has raised questions about the impact on the team's dynamics and the pressure on emerging stars like Reese, Caitlin Clark, and Paige Bueckers. However, Reese has expressed confidence in her teammates, stating, "I’m just trying to focus on who is here." This mindset reflects her belief in the talent available to Team USA, which includes a mix of experienced and rookie players.

With nine members of the squad participating in their first World Cup and seven competing in their inaugural major tournament for the national team, the roster is notably youthful. This fresh lineup offers an opportunity for new talent to shine on the international stage, even as it loses two seasoned veterans. Reese, in particular, is expected to take on a more significant role in the absence of Wilson, contributing defensively and on the boards while collaborating with her fellow young stars to create effective offensive plays.

When asked about the potential pressure of stepping up, Reese remained unfazed, emphasizing the depth of talent within the team. She acknowledged the contributions of Wilson and Plum but reiterated her focus on maximizing the abilities of those who are available. In her words, "Of course, A’ja brings a lot for us, for sure, her and KP. But we’re just trying to focus on who is here, figure that out, and make sure we’re all up to par and ready for the show." This approach indicates a collective commitment to teamwork and preparation, crucial for success in a highly competitive environment.

Team USA head coach Kara Lawson shares a similar sentiment, emphasizing the need to concentrate on the players present in Berlin. Lawson has expressed her disappointment over the loss of Wilson and Plum but is focused on building chemistry among the remaining squad members. She acknowledged that she was not privy to Wilson's decision-making process and has instead turned her attention to the players who are ready to compete. Lawson stated, "We wish them both a speedy recovery with what they’re dealing with, and we don’t have time to be worried about who’s not here. We’ve got to really focus on ourselves and how we’re going to develop our chemistry in the short lead-up."

Wilson's withdrawal is particularly surprising given her recent performance, where she scored 27 points in a game against the Toronto Tempo just before the World Cup break, showing no visible signs of injury. However, the focus now shifts to how Team USA will adapt and strive for an unprecedented fifth consecutive championship with the roster in place. Replacing Wilson and Plum on the roster are Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron from the Washington Mystics, both of whom have experience with the national team from previous training camps and qualification tournaments.

As Team USA prepares for the World Cup, the emphasis will be on resilience and teamwork, with Reese and her teammates looking to make a strong impression on the international stage.
