Anthony Wint Reflects on Overcoming Gambling Addiction and UFC Success

In a candid revelation, UFC fighter Anthony Wint has opened up about his struggles with gambling addiction, describing it as a more formidable opponent than any he has faced in the Octagon. Wint, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets in 2018, faced numerous challenges after being waived the following year and subsequently attempting to make a comeback in the NFL.

Wint's journey into gambling began during his college years, where a seemingly innocent wager turned into an eight-year struggle with addiction. He recounted a pivotal moment when he and a teammate received $300 from a friend's father to gamble. Wint transformed that initial stake into $1,000, igniting a desire for more that would lead him down a dark path.

“When that [NFL comeback] didn’t happen, I was sitting there broke, homeless, hungry,” Wint told renowned MMA journalist Ariel Helwani. He reflected on the desperation he felt during that time, emphasizing how the initial thrill of winning money became a trap. “I just made $700 in two hours. That was the trap. That was the trap of the devil. And he had me in those chains for eight years,” he explained, highlighting the profound impact of his addiction on his life.

Despite these challenges, Wint has recently found success in the UFC. He earned a contract with the organization after a first-round knockout victory over Matthew Adams on Dana White’s Contender Series. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his career, as he was determined not to leave Las Vegas without securing his UFC debut.

Wint made an impressive 11-day turnaround to compete in his first UFC fight, where he faced Terrance Chatman at UFC Sacramento. While many fighters would consider the competition their biggest hurdle, Wint revealed that the real battle for him was resisting the temptation to gamble while in Las Vegas.

He stated, “The battle wasn’t Matthew Adams, the battle wasn’t Terrance Chatman. The battle was having me sit in Vegas and not gamble.” Wint credited his faith for helping him overcome these temptations, expressing gratitude for his ability to resist the allure of slot machines and blackjack tables during his time in the city.

Wint's story serves as an inspiration not only for aspiring athletes but also for anyone grappling with addiction. His journey illustrates the importance of resilience and the power of personal strength in overcoming life's challenges. As he continues to compete in the UFC, Wint remains focused on his recovery and hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles.
