The Arizona Wildcats faced a tough challenge on Friday afternoon as they took on the No. 10 ranked Creighton Bluejays in a thrilling five-set volleyball match. Despite a valiant effort, the Wildcats fell short, losing 3-2 with set scores of 26-24, 19-25, 19-25, 25-18, and 15-12. Arizona head coach Rita Stubbs emphasized the importance of fighting spirit, and her team certainly displayed that throughout the contest.
After the match, Stubbs expressed pride in her squad's performance, stating, "I told the team that there’s nothing to hang our heads about. We went out there and we competed and we learned a lot of things." This sentiment reflects the growth and determination of a Wildcats team that has faced its share of challenges this season.
Arizona's resilience was evident as they battled back multiple times during the match. The Wildcats were on the verge of securing their first road victory against a top 10 team since Stubbs took over as head coach in 2023. Senior outside hitter Destiny Ndam-Simpson was particularly impactful, leading the team with 16 kills, complemented by four aces, four blocks, and nine digs. Playing in her hometown against her former team, Ndam-Simpson's performance was a testament to her skill and tenacity.
Supporting Ndam-Simpson were sophomore opposite hitter Renee Jones and junior outside hitter Carlie Cisneros, both of whom contributed significantly to the team's effort. Jones recorded 12 kills with an impressive .423 hitting efficiency, while Cisneros bounced back from a previous match to add 11 kills at a .310 hitting rate. Stubbs noted Cisneros's ability to rise to the occasion, saying, "Carly always shows up for the big teams. I mean, it’s always like I got something to show y’all that I’m capable of doing it." This collective effort highlighted the depth and talent within the Wildcats' lineup.
The match began with a closely contested first set, where both teams were tied at 9-9 before Creighton surged ahead. However, Arizona responded with a remarkable comeback, thanks to the serving of Maria Olga Siapani, who delivered two aces that sparked a run and brought the Wildcats back into contention. They managed to tie the set at 24, showcasing their fighting spirit.
In the second set, Arizona continued to push back against Creighton, eventually taking a lead in the third set at 5-4 and maintaining control to go up 17-10. This marked a significant shift in momentum, as the Wildcats demonstrated their ability to compete with a ranked opponent. However, the match took a turn in the decisive fifth set, where Creighton's Trinity Shadd-Ceres emerged as a formidable force, scoring 12 of her 29 kills in the final two sets.
Stubbs noted that the Wildcats became hesitant in the fifth set, which allowed Creighton to capitalize on their opportunities. She remarked, "We were doing a phenomenal job blocking in sets one through three, and then all of a sudden that died off, and zero had her way with us." This observation highlights the need for consistency and aggression as the team prepares for future matches.
Looking ahead, Arizona will face Tulsa in their next outing, and Stubbs emphasized the importance of maintaining the same intensity they displayed against Creighton. "It’s not hard getting the team motivated for a top 10 opponent. The key is how do you respond when a team that’s equal to you or even better than you, just not in the top 10," she said. As the Wildcats continue their season, they will aim to build on the lessons learned from this challenging match.
