ASU football icon Cam Skattebo starts skirmish. What did Harbaugh say?

Cam Skattebo was at it again.

The former Arizona State running back, known for his energetic nature and bulldozing style of play, started a skirmish during training camp with the New York Giants on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Skattebo, now in his second NFL season with the Giants, went to work following a play in which he had to be separated from defensive backs Greg Newsome II and Jevón Holland. Edge rusher Brian Burns reportedly got into coach John Harbaugh’s ear about the scuffle after the whistle, and later, Skattebo made his way over to the defensive sideline in an attempt to make peace.

A reporter asked Harbaugh if Skattebo’s energy is infectious to the rest of the team.

“Well, Skatt’s great,” Harbaugh told reporters. “He does bring a lot of energy, but he did get a 15-yard penalty at the end of practice. Did you notice that? That’s not infectious. Well, it is infectious, actually. Infectious in a bad way, right?

“Like an infectious disease type of thing. We don’t want that. We want that to be directed in a positive way.”

No punches were thrown during the exchange, but defensive players take exception to hard contact made by offensive players because retaliation is now allowed.

Connor Hughes of SNY believed an intrasquad scuffle initiated by Skattebo was "a long time coming," since the second-year back reportedly had been jawing with Giants defenders throughout camp.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reported that Skattebo "has had it coming" after he laid a hit on Giants linebacker Zaire Barnes in another situation when the defense was prohibited from making contact.

Giants offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor responded to Leonard's initial report in a social media post of his own after practice, calling it a "BS Narrative."

Skattebo, 24, became a widely popular player as a rookie for the Giants a year ago when he rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and caught 24 passes for two more scores before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Giants play their final preseason game on Friday, Aug. 28, against the New York Jets. Harbaugh did not specify whether the starters will play or have to wait until the season opener on Sept. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
