Aubrey Lewis-Byers, a standout player from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been appointed as the new head coach for the Green Bay Preble girls basketball team. Known for his impressive playing career from 1999 to 2003, Lewis-Byers was pivotal in leading the men’s basketball team to two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles. His transition from player to coach marks a new chapter for both him and the Preble program.
Lewis-Byers steps into this role following the departure of Lyndsey Seela, who concluded her five-season tenure with the team. Under Seela's leadership, the Hornets compiled a record of 49 wins against 75 losses, with a notable highlight being a winning season in 2024-25, where the team finished 14-11 and tied for fourth in the Fox River Classic Conference.
In the most recent season, the Hornets ended with an 11-14 record, placing fifth in the nine-team conference. Lewis-Byers aims to revitalize the program and bring a winning culture to the team. He expressed his vision for the role, emphasizing that coaching extends beyond just teaching basketball skills. "Basketball provides a powerful platform to teach young women lessons that will stay with them long after their playing days are over," he stated. He aims to cultivate discipline, resilience, and teamwork among his players.
Lewis-Byers's impressive background as a player bodes well for his coaching aspirations. He is the only player in Whitewater history to earn first-team all-conference honors for all four years of his college career. He graduated with remarkable statistics, ranking second in program history with 1,958 points and 677 field goals, while also holding the record for most free throws made at 598. His scoring average of 18.5 points per game, along with his contributions in blocked shots and steals, demonstrate his all-around skill set on the court.
In recognition of his outstanding career, Lewis-Byers is set to be inducted into the Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame this October, an honor that underscores his impact on the sport.
As he embarks on this new journey with the Hornets, Lewis-Byers will have a talented roster to work with. The previous season saw three players from Preble earn all-conference honors, including senior guard Brooklynn Lucassen, who averaged a team-high 12.7 points per game. Juniors Gracie Day and Camille Konkol also made significant contributions, with Day and Konkol combining for an average of 13 rebounds per game.
Preble athletic director Tim Flood expressed enthusiasm about the future of the girls basketball program under Lewis-Byers's guidance. "We are excited about what lies ahead for our girls basketball program with Coach Lewis-Byers leading the way," Flood said, highlighting the coach's leadership, experience, and passion as key factors that will inspire the student-athletes both on the court and in their lives beyond basketball.
