Barcelona aiming to make January move if they fail to sign top target this summer

Barcelona’s continued pursuit of Julian Alvarez has been commendable, but the club are yet to make a breakthrough.

Although the Argentine has been trying everything he can to leave Atletico Madrid, his club remain determined not to allow him to join a direct rival.

This has led to a feeling that he might not join Barcelona at all this summer, with the club already preparing for a plan B.

According to Catalunya Radio (h/t FCB World), Barcelona might return to the market for Julian Alvarez if they fail to sign him this summer.

This is almost given considering the fact that Alvarez is going nowhere this week, with time seemingly running out.

Although Atleti are slowly considering the possibility of selling the player this summer, Alvarez remains determined to only join Barcelona.

The former Man City starlet has already rejected an approach from Arsenal, and it is unlikely the Gunners would want to spend a fortune on the player.

That means there is a stark possibility Alvarez may end up remaining at Atletico Madrid, though whether he plays or not is an entirely different question.

The biggest question is now whether or not Barcelona will have the capital to make a move for Alvarez.

From a financial perspective, the club should have enough firepower to make a move for Alvarez. But everything, at the end, will depend on Atletico Madrid.

At the end of the day, the Argentine still has a long-term contract in the Spanish capital, to a point where six months won’t matter in the broader scheme of things.

However, if Alvarez somehow manages to continue irking the Atletico Madrid board, the club could be forced to consider the offer from Barcelona.

The Catalans are willing to fork out around €100 million for the services of Alvarez. Whether or not that will be enticing enough for the Atleti board in January remains to be seen.
