Baseball Oversight Committee to scale back initial ABS rollout

After the NCAA Rules Subcommittee initially approved a full rollout of the ABS challenge system, new rules have been implemented for a more experimental process beginning in 2027.

National college baseball reporter Jacob Rudner says Baseball America has learned that the Baseball Oversight Committee has decided to scale back ABS to conference contests only this upcoming year. This comes after they announced the challenge system would be available to use during any college baseball game.

Texas A&M tested the system during its testing stage at this past season's SEC Tournament, which coaches across the league considered a smash hit.

The Automated Ball-Strike challenge system is modeled after the professional system, with a college spin. It allows the batter, catcher, or pitcher to challenge ball-and-strike calls using technology that tracks strike zones. Each team starts the game with three challenges. Successful challenges are maintained, but a team loses a challenge if the call on the field stands after review.

The ins and outs of how ABS will work with college baseball scheduling remain to be seen. For the SEC, it could mean it's accessible during conference play, unavailable during midweek games, available again for the league tournament, then lost again during the NCAA Tournament. However, the more likely outcome is that it will also be available during postseason play.
