MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich's head coach Vincent Kompany has stated that it would not be a significant concern if star midfielder Jamal Musiala were to experience another seizure as he navigates a neurological condition that has caused him to collapse in the past.
Musiala, who publicly revealed his diagnosis of "absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction," faced two incidents during preseason matches that raised alarms about his health. Since then, he has returned to training after adjusting his medication, although he has yet to make an appearance in a competitive match.
Kompany expressed confidence in the medical team surrounding Musiala, assuring that they are working with the "very best experts" in the field. He emphasized that should Musiala experience another episode in the coming weeks or months, it would not be alarming. "If it does happen again in 40, 50, 60 days' time or in 40, 50, 60 games' time, then it's no longer a big deal for us. We know how to deal with it and at some stage he’s just going to be a totally normal athlete again," Kompany stated.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been included in Bayern's squad for the upcoming UEFA Champions League, with Kompany indicating that he is closely monitoring Musiala's performance in training sessions before determining when he can return to a game-day roster.
“He’s doing well, he’s had a good week,” Kompany commented, noting that the initial public shock surrounding Musiala's condition is beginning to fade. Bayern Munich has been aware of Musiala's health issue since at least the previous season, and the player himself has reassured fans that there is "no additional health risk" associated with playing soccer.
Musiala's potential return to action could come this Saturday when Bayern faces Schalke in the Bundesliga, or during their Champions League opener against Bodo/Glimt the following Thursday. His last competitive appearance was during the World Cup, where Germany suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32.
As Bayern Munich prepares for the challenges ahead, the club remains optimistic about Musiala's health and future contributions to the team, which is crucial as they aim for success in both domestic and international competitions.
