The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially addressed concerns regarding the accommodation and logistical arrangements for the Indian cricket teams participating in the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that there are no immediate issues, but the board is prepared to intervene if necessary to ensure optimal conditions for the players.
Concerns had been raised about the facilities available to cricket teams as the multi-sport event approaches. The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) has stated that hotel accommodations are being provided, while teams also have the option to make their own arrangements. This flexibility has been a point of reassurance for the BCCI as they prepare for the Games.
During a review meeting held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, Saikia expressed confidence in the arrangements made for the Indian squads. He stated, “There is no such issue that we have discussed or which is on our agenda today or prior to today also. So we are not going to have any difficulties in Japan. If any kind of situation arises, we will take an appropriate call at the right time to ensure that our players and the support staff will get the best facilities in the Asian Games.” He further added that if necessary, the BCCI will implement its own systems to guarantee that players receive the best possible support.
This reassurance from the BCCI comes amid broader logistical challenges surrounding the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Organizers have confirmed that accommodations have been secured for all registered athletes and officials, despite the total number of participants exceeding 17,000. Athletes will be housed in various locations, including hotels, temporary accommodations, and even a cruise ship, which deviates from the traditional athletes' village format.
India enters the Asian Games as the defending champions in both men's and women's T20 cricket. The men's team will be captained by Shreyas Iyer, while the women's team will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur. VVS Laxman, the director of cricket at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, will manage the men's side in Japan, supported by coaches Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, and Subhadeep Ghosh. Laxman previously led the men’s team to a gold medal victory at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Meanwhile, the women's team will be coached by Amol Muzumdar, with assistance from Aavishkar Salvi and Munish Bali. The men's campaign is set to commence on September 24, while the women's team will enter the competition at the quarterfinal stage, facing Japan.
With both squads featuring a mix of established international players and promising newcomers, the BCCI's focus remains on ensuring that logistical issues do not hinder India's pursuit of retaining both Asian Games cricket titles. The stakes are high as the teams prepare to showcase their skills on an international stage.
