Just before the Chicago Bears started their preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals this past Saturday, it was revealed that quarterback Caleb Williams and other starters would make their preseason debut after Thursday's joint practice.
That lasted all of one drive for Williams and the offensive starters who joined him, a drive that ended with just three points and the Bears quarterback finished 2-for-5 passing for 28 yards.
Following the 27-9 loss to the Bengals, Williams spoke about his play in limited time, believing he played well but that the defense also made a couple of plays on his passes. Emphasizing the fact that there needs to be 100% focus all of the time, Williams says even 99% execution is not good enough for what he or the team wants to do.
"I felt like I was pretty on today," Williams said. "We had one or two batted balls, and then I had the wrong incompletion on purpose just because the linebacker got up under it. It's a thing you can control. There are so many details within each play, and each play needs 100% of your focus. If you go 99%, or one of your teammates goes 99% while everybody else gives 100%, it comes down to everybody doing their 1/11th on the field. It's just getting back into the flow of playing a game, so we'll go look at the tape and figure it out."
The limited action for Williams is all head coach Ben Johnson wanted to see out of the quarterback in the preseason, and his comments after the game shows the mindset he is carrying into his third season this year. In his second year in Johnson's offense, Williams is looking to keep the team's winning ways going while taking yet another jump in his development as a franchise leader.
