Beau Peterson, a recent draftee of the Houston Astros, made headlines after choosing to sign with the team instead of pursuing his college career at the University of Texas. The decision came after an impressive showing at the MLB's 2025 All-Star event in Atlanta, where Peterson won the high school home run derby, showcasing his potential as a future star.
Hailing from the Kansas City area, Peterson grew up as a fan of the Kansas City Royals, particularly during their successful runs to the World Series in 2014 and 2015. His connection to Houston was solidified during the 2015 playoffs when he attended a game at Minute Maid Park, marking his first experience in the stadium. Fast forward to the present, and Peterson found himself back in Houston, but this time as a member of the Astros organization after being selected with the No. 133 overall pick in the fourth round of the July draft.
The Astros were able to secure Peterson's services with a significant bonus of approximately $3 million, far exceeding the slot value of $569,600 for his draft position. This opportunity arose after the team received a compensation pick due to Framber Valdez signing elsewhere as a qualified free agent. Peterson's commitment to the University of Texas was strong, but the allure of joining the Astros proved too great to resist.
Reflecting on his decision, Peterson noted the strong relationship he developed with the Astros during the pre-draft process, which included a Zoom meeting and consistent communication leading up to the draft. "We had a strong relationship and we were loyal to Texas, and it was going to take a lot not to go there, and Houston came around and you can’t pass up this opportunity," Peterson stated. He emphasized the importance of starting his professional career early, with aspirations of winning a World Series and becoming an All-Star.
Peterson, who is a left-handed hitter, excelled in multiple roles during his high school career, playing both shortstop and pitching. His accolades include being named Gatorade's Kansas baseball player of the year this spring and his victory in the MLB All-Star High School Home Run Derby. Astros director of amateur scouting, Cam Pendino, expressed confidence in Peterson's abilities, describing him as a "left-handed premium bat who’s got power" and a player who has demonstrated a strong approach at the plate.
Currently, Peterson is focusing on his development at the Astros' minor-league facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. After undergoing hamate surgery on his right hand following his high school season, he is working primarily at third base while also getting some experience in the outfield. He is set to participate in the instructional league camp after a brief visit to Houston.
The Astros’ strategy in the draft this year included selecting four prep players, and they successfully signed two of them, including Peterson and third-round pick Keon Johnson. Peterson and Johnson, who are familiar with each other from their travel ball days, are now rooming together as they embark on their professional journeys in Florida. Peterson expressed his excitement about being drafted, stating, "I heard my name called and it’s a dream come true, and now the work really starts."
