Berlin Brothersvalley runs past Juniata Valley to open season

BERLIN — Junior running back Carter Durst rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, leading Berlin Brothersvalley to a 25-14 victory over Juniata Valley at the Center Rock Inc. Sports Complex, Friday, Aug. 28.

The Mountaineers delivered a blow on the opening kickoff when senior captain Jake Philip pelted Elah Glenny, sending the ball into the hands of Corbin Kordell, who raced into the end zone for a touchdown. Josh Brinton added the extra point and Berlin Brothersvalley led 7-0, just 11 seconds into the game.

Juniata Valley evened things just past the midway point of the first quarter. A short punt gave the Hornets the ball at the Mountaineer 33-yard line. Senior running back Andrew Clark finished the 7-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Berlin Brothersvalley regained the lead following a Juniata Valley short punt less than three minutes into the second quarter. Durst galloped 24 yards to paydirt. The PAT was blocked, but the Mountaineers led 13-7 with 9:36 to go in the half.

The Mountaineers took that lead into the break.

Berlin Brothersvalley added to its lead on the opening series of the second half. The Mountaineers marched 65 yards – all coming on the ground – capped by a Jaedon Brown 26-yard touchdown scamper. The two-point conversion failed, and the Mountaineers held a 19-7 advantage with 7:28 to go in the quarter.

An impressive 16-play drive, covering 92 yards that carried into the fourth quarter gave the Mountaineers a commanding lead. Quarterback Brady Janidlo connected with Dawson Shaffer on a 31-yard pass on third-and-26 to set up first-and-goal. Durst tallied his second score of the goal on a 3-yard burst. Clark added a late touchdown from two yards out with 4:55 to go. The Hornets were aided by three Mountaineer penalties on a punt to retain the football. The Mountaineers stymied Clark, who rushed for nearly 1,800 yards a season ago. They held him to just 72 yards on the ground.
