The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to the Buffalo Bills, 28-27, in the preseason finale. The Steelers conclude the preseason with a 1-2 record.
Mike McCarthy and the Steelers will now turn their focus to the regular season. Pittsburgh opens at Acrisure Stadium on Sept. 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Buffalo got on the board first with a 33-yard field goal by Tyler Bass after a long opening drive by the Bills.
The Steelers went three-and-out on their opening drive, but Buffalo’s Ray Davis muffed the punt, setting the Steelers up with great field position at Buffalo’s 13-yard line. On the following play, Steelers rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard caught a short screen from Will Howard and went 13 yards for a touchdown. Bernard broke two tackles and went into the end zone, giving the Steelers a 7-3 lead with 7:10 remaining in the first quarter.
Howard finished 9 of 15 for 69 yards with two touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 83.1. He was also sacked three times for a loss 22 yards. Rookie offensive tackle Max Iheanachor was responsible for one of the sacks.
Rookie quarterback Drew Allar replaced Howard in the second half. On his first possession, Allar led the Steelers on a 11-play, 68-yard touchdown. It was capped by rookie Eli Heidenreich on a 9-yard touchdown run. Iheanachor led the way on the pitch play to the right.
