In a landmark transaction within the sports world, billionaire Mark Walter is reportedly selling the Los Angeles Lakers to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner for an astounding $12.5 billion. This sale marks a significant moment in NBA history, as it sets a new record for the highest price ever paid for a sports franchise.

In a joint statement to ESPN, Iger and Kushner expressed their excitement about the acquisition, stating, "As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles." Their passion for the game and dedication to the franchise suggests a promising future for the Lakers.

The duo's interest in acquiring the Lakers comes after their involvement in the NBA's expansion discussions in Las Vegas. However, they shifted their focus to the Lakers, making a bold offer that ultimately led to this record-breaking sale. This unexpected move comes just a year after Walter, the CEO and chairman of TWG Global, purchased a controlling stake in the Lakers from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion, which was also a record at that time.

Walter shared his sentiments regarding his time as the owner of the Lakers, stating, “Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life – an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family.” He expressed gratitude towards Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff, emphasizing that the Lakers belong to Los Angeles and that he is confident about the team's future.

At 66 years old, Walter has a diverse portfolio of investments in various sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chelsea FC in the Premier League. He has also ventured into auto racing with TWG Motorsports, which includes Cadillac's Formula 1 team. However, Walter is currently facing a federal investigation related to alleged tax fraud involving other companies associated with him.

Bob Iger, who recently concluded his second tenure as Disney CEO in March, has a history of involvement in sports ownership. He and his wife, Willow Bay, became controlling owners of Angel City FC, a National Women’s Soccer League club, in July 2024. At 75, Iger's experience in managing large organizations and his commitment to sports could bode well for the Lakers as they navigate a new era.

As Iger and Kushner prepare to take the reins, the Lakers are entering a transitional phase following the departure of superstar LeBron James, who left for the Philadelphia 76ers after an impressive eight seasons in Los Angeles, during which he led the team to an NBA championship. The Lakers are now looking to build around new star Luka Doncic, along with recent acquisitions like big man Walker Kessler and the re-signing of guard Austin Reaves, as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
