Despite Jaylen Brown leaving the team in acrimonious fashion, the Boston Celtics will likely retire his #7 jersey.
Brown was with the Celtics for a decade, making multiple All-Star and All-NBA teams, along with leading the team to an NBA championship in 2024 and winning Finals MVP in the process.
The Celtics traded Brown this summer after a season where the superstar’s relationship with the franchise was completely destroyed.

While discussing the difficulty of his role as Celtics GM and how he has to give up certain players, Stevens admitted that Brown’s jersey number will be sent up to the rafters of the TD Garden.
“I get a lot of emails and a lot of people that ask about wanting to be a GM. I’m like, ‘I wish you would’ve been around last summer when we basically had to trade Jrue Holiday.’
“That’s like brutal. Or we go through this long, arduous process and ultimately decide to trade Jaylen, whose numbers will likely go up in the rafters in Boston. Not fun.”
The Celtics, even with the way he left the team, clearly admire Brown as a player and appreciate what he did for the team.
Considering how important Brown was for the Celtics in the quest to win their first NBA championship in 16 years, that makes a lot of sense.
Other players like Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett have had their jersey numbers retired after winning one championship with the Celtics, so Brown having his jersey lifted up to the rafters at TD Garden makes sense.
Across his career with the Celtics, he averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, earning multiple All-Star and All-NBA honours, and was an MVP candidate during the 2025-26 season.
While Jayson Tatum was always considered by many to be the star of the team, it was Brown who was relied upon in clutch moments to deliver for the team, with the 2024 NBA Finals being a prime example.
Now on the 76ers, Brown will be hoping to match or even surpass his accolades with the Celtics and win another NBA championship.
