Braden Fiske Reflects on Jared Verse Trade and Its Impact on His Career

Braden Fiske and Jared Verse share a deep bond that traces back to their college days at Florida State University. As teammates, they played pivotal roles in leading the Seminoles to an undefeated regular season in 2023. Their impressive performances caught the attention of NFL scouts, resulting in both players being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 2024, with Verse being selected in the first round and Fiske following in the second.

However, the camaraderie they built was tested this past summer when the Rams executed a surprising trade, sending Verse to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for star defensive end Myles Garrett. This unexpected move left Fiske in Los Angeles, now separated from his close friend and former teammate by over 2,000 miles.

Initially, Fiske was devastated by the loss of Verse, but in a recent interview with Jordan Schultz, he expressed a nuanced perspective on the trade. He suggested that the separation might ultimately benefit his career. Fiske acknowledged that their close friendship had made them somewhat complacent during their time together. He noted, “At the same time, I think it was a good thing to happen to my career that – I think there was a lull in our career of like, ‘Oh, this is just great. Get to work with our best friends every single day and just go about our business.’”

Fiske reflected on the reality of professional sports, where relationships can change rapidly due to business decisions. He admitted that while he understands the nature of the NFL, the emotional impact of losing Verse was significant. “That hit pretty hard pretty quick. My first instinct isn’t, ‘Oh, s---. We got Myles Garrett.’ My first instinct is like, ‘Oh, s---. We lost Jared. That really sucks,’” he shared, illustrating the personal toll of such trades.

Despite the emotional upheaval, Fiske remains optimistic about his future with the Rams. He recognizes the importance of adapting to the changes in the team dynamics and is focused on his development as a player. He mentioned that while he and Verse don’t communicate as frequently as they did in the past, they both understand the demands of their respective careers. Fiske anticipates reconnecting with Verse during the offseason, allowing them to maintain their friendship despite the distance.

This situation highlights the often harsh realities of professional sports, where friendships can be impacted by business decisions. Fiske's reflections on the trade underscore the balance athletes must strike between personal relationships and professional responsibilities. As he prepares for the upcoming season, Fiske is determined to make the most of his opportunity with the Rams while cherishing the memories of his time with Verse.
