PARK TWP. - In a thrilling display of defensive prowess, Braden Overbeek's two interceptions played a pivotal role in West Ottawa's commanding 53-22 victory over Mattawan on Thursday, September 3, at West Ottawa Stadium. The sophomore free safety showcased his skills, with both interceptions leading to touchdowns that extended the Panthers' lead and ultimately sealed the game.
Overbeek, the only sophomore starter on the Panthers' roster, made a significant impact while donning the familiar No. 20 jersey, a number that holds personal significance for him. His older sister, Chelsea, was a standout athlete at West Ottawa and wore the same number during her successful basketball career. Braden carries on the family legacy, honoring his father, Dan, who also wore No. 20 during his high school football days at Zeeland High School.
"I wear 20 to honor my dad. He wore it his whole high school career, and he was pretty good," Overbeek shared, reflecting on the inspiration behind his choice of jersey number. His family's athletic background undoubtedly played a role in his development as a player.
West Ottawa head coach Pat Collins praised Overbeek's performance, noting the importance of his contributions as a sophomore in a high-pressure home game. "He has speed, athleticism, and explosiveness, and his raw instincts are huge. When we got to the summer, we gave him a really good look because we knew he had the potential. He stepped up, and that is a big deal for us," Collins remarked. The coach emphasized that Overbeek's ability to make crucial plays in his first home game was a testament to his talent and composure.
Leading 14-6 after two touchdown runs by Jeremiah Edwards, Overbeek's first interception came when a Mattawan pass was tipped, allowing him to make a crucial 29-yard return to the 6-yard line. "Even before the play, my teammates were loud in their communicating. I stayed back in coverage, and the quarterback threw it right to me. Our energy boosted, and that got everyone even more hype. It is a big win," Overbeek explained.
Following his interception, quarterback Abel Anaya quickly capitalized on the momentum, scoring a touchdown just two plays later to extend the lead to 21-6. Overbeek struck again shortly after, intercepting another pass from Mattawan's Ethan Saunders, which set up yet another rushing touchdown from Brycen Carraso-Silva, pushing the score to 35-6 midway through the second quarter.
The Panthers' offense was firing on all cylinders, with Edwards scoring five touchdowns in the first half alone. The last time West Ottawa scored more than 40 points in a game was back on October 4, 2019, and they achieved this milestone with five minutes left in the first half against Mattawan.
In the third quarter, JT Gill added to the scoring with a jet sweep touchdown, bringing the score to 53-12. Coach Collins expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "We ran the offense better and settled into our identity better this week. We as a staff needed to do a better job with him to put him in positions to be successful. We did that tonight, and he responded awesome. I am excited to see him grow. I think he could be a top three quarterback in our league."
Defensively, the Panthers controlled the line of scrimmage, with players like Christian DeWitt, Josh Pearson, Xander Mullins, and Alex Carrier consistently pressuring the quarterback. Collins noted the team's overall growth on defense, stating, "They were on point and doing a better job all the way around. Defensively, we made the most growth, and our guys won the games within the games."
