KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — In an impressive display of skill, freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon led No. 20 Tennessee to a commanding 56-9 victory over Furman on Saturday. Brandon showcased his dual-threat capabilities, throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns while also adding two rushing touchdowns to his impressive stat line.
The Volunteers wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping out to a 42-0 lead by the end of the second quarter. Brandon connected with wide receiver Mike Matthews for scoring passes of 55 and 57 yards, igniting the Tennessee offense. After Brandon's stellar performance in the first half, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre took over the quarterback duties.
In addition to Brandon's standout performance, running back DeSean Bishop contributed with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown, although he did lose a fumble during the game. A highlight for Tennessee came in the fourth quarter when Justin Baker broke free for a remarkable 73-yard touchdown run, further extending the Volunteers' lead.
On the defensive side, Tennessee's Xavier Gilliam, a transfer from Penn State, made a significant impact by sacking Furman quarterback Jake Garcia three times. The Volunteers' defense effectively stifled the Paladins, who compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, allowing them to score all their points following Tennessee turnovers.
Garcia struggled throughout the contest, completing 8 of 17 passes for just 36 yards. Furman's lone touchdown came from Isaiah Davis, who managed a 23-yard rushing score. Despite the lopsided score, the Paladins can take solace in knowing they faced a formidable opponent in Tennessee, which is likely the toughest challenge they will encounter this season.
Tennessee's victory, while not significantly impacting their No. 20 ranking, serves as a confidence booster as they prepare for a challenging road game against Georgia Tech next week. The experience gained by Brandon in this game will be invaluable as he faces a hostile environment in Atlanta.
Looking ahead, Furman will play at Mercer on September 12, while Tennessee will also face Georgia Tech on the same day. Both teams will be eager to build on their respective performances as the season progresses.
