CLEVELAND (AP) — In a thrilling display of talent, Brayan Rocchio, the shortstop for the Cleveland Guardians, etched his name into baseball history on Friday. He became only the sixth player in Major League Baseball (MLB) to achieve the remarkable feat of hitting both a grand slam and a walk-off home run in the same game, leading the Guardians to a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Rocchio's performance was nothing short of extraordinary, as he described his accomplishment in one word: “Impressive.” The 25-year-old Venezuelan showcased his skills by hitting a tying grand slam in the fourth inning before sealing the game with a walk-off homer in the ninth. This victory was particularly significant as it marked the first game of a split doubleheader, with the Guardians rallying to score the last six runs of the contest.
With this achievement, Rocchio joins an elite group of players, including legends such as George Kelly, Hank Greenberg, Minnie Minoso, Otto Velez, and Jack Clark. Each of these players has left an indelible mark on the game, and Rocchio's inclusion in this list speaks volumes about his potential and talent. Notably, three of these players—Kelly, Greenberg, and Minoso—are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Rocchio has spent all four of his MLB seasons with the Guardians, who are currently in pursuit of their third consecutive postseason appearance. Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt praised Rocchio's consistency and dedication, stating, “What a cool day for him. Every season has a different story, but he’s been really consistent with his work and with his effort all along.”
Adding to the uniqueness of his performance, Rocchio hit his grand slam from the left side of the plate off pitcher Keider Montero and then switched to the right side to hit the walk-off homer against Drew Sommers. “First time in my life, yeah,” Rocchio said with a smile, reflecting on the rarity of such an accomplishment.
The grand slam traveled an impressive 366 feet, igniting celebrations in the Guardians dugout, where teammates erupted in joy as Rocchio crossed home plate after his game-ending 405-foot shot. This victory was crucial for the Guardians, as it allowed them to maintain their grip on the final American League wild-card spot.
“Everything that we do is for the team, to help the team make the playoffs,” Rocchio emphasized, highlighting his commitment to the Guardians. With a season batting average of .247, along with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs in 134 games, Rocchio continues to prove his worth as a vital player for Cleveland as they strive for postseason success.
