Werder Bremen will be without influential midfielder Jens Stage for several months, the Bundesliga club announced just before their league opener on Sunday.
The Dane has suffered a significant hamstring injury in a major blow to a squad which already looks short of quality.
"I'm really sorry for Jens, and we will do everything to make sure he heals quickly and is back fit again soon," coach Daniel Thioune said before the game at Freiburg.
"Given the severity of the injury, we don't expect Jens back on the pitch again this year."
He played in the German Cup first-round win over Lüneburger SK last weekend, but his next match is set to be January at the earliest.
Bremen have just a day left in the transfer window if they decide to bring someone in to cover the 29-year-old's absence.
