From that point on, the Cubs' offense went cold. Following Bregman's two-run single, the Cubs only managed to get four more baserunners for the remainder of the game, none of whom advanced past first base. The lack of offensive production proved costly, as the Brewers extended their lead in the seventh inning, scoring another run off reliever Daniel Palencia.
The ninth inning saw further struggles for the Cubs as Jacob Webb, who had been performing well, took a line drive off his arm, leading to his exit from the game. Fortunately, X-rays revealed no fractures, although he did suffer a significant bruise. The Brewers took advantage of the situation, scoring two more runs to seal the 9-5 victory.
This loss marks a troubling trend for the Cubs, who have now lost seven games since August 1 after holding leads of multiple runs, the highest number in Major League Baseball. The Cubs have struggled to maintain their momentum, and this defeat against the Brewers highlights the need for improvement, particularly in their pitching staff.
Looking ahead, the Cubs will have an opportunity to split the four-game series with the Brewers in the finale on Thursday evening.
