Is Lane Kiffin a genius or a rule-bending operator willing to do anything to win?
I'm going with both.
The new boss at LSU is the talk of football, again, thanks to his pursuit of tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who played for him at Mississippi. Wright was just waived by the Cleveland Browns, who like Kiffin seem to find controversy at every turn. That's a topic for another day.
Kiffin is trying to make the unheard move of bringing a player back to college after he has been cut by the NFL. Kiffin would defend the move by saying he is just trying to make his team better.
Those involved with both the NFL and college football are going berserk over Kiffin's move. Kind of "how care he?" chant. Well, if you have followed Kiffin's career, you understand he doesn't seem to bother with norms. How else to explain a guy leaving his team in the middle of a run for a possible national title.
Kiffin follows his own set of rules, not those set by the NCAA or NFL.
Stuck in the middle is Wright, who is trying to continue playing football. Hard to blame him for his interest in returning to school if the NFL is not currently an option.
Bottom line on the entire episode: it is not the end of the world if Wright spends a season playing in Baton Rouge. Heck, it might work out great for him as he has a chance to build his NFL credentials.
When it hired Kiffin, LSU knew what it was getting: an unconventional guy with a lot of wins and a lot of baggage. Few in college football outside of Louisiana are rooting for him and he doesn't seem to care.
