FULTON — The Caston football team has made headlines by achieving a 2-0 record for the first time in 17 years, following an impressive 45-0 victory over North White on Friday night at the Crater. This commanding win not only marks a significant milestone for the program but also highlights the team's physical dominance on the field.
In their previous matchup against Whitko, the Comets displayed a similar level of control, leading to aspirations of a successful season. Caston coach Chris Ulerick expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, “We did what we needed to do. We are certainly not pretty. But the results are still good.” He acknowledged the need for improvement but emphasized the toughness of his players. “They’re big, they’re tough, and hopefully we can keep answering the bell,” he added, noting that the team has yet to face a serious challenge in the early part of the season.
The upcoming schedule poses a greater challenge for the Comets, beginning with a game against North Miami, a team they have historically struggled against, winning only once in 17 all-time meetings. The lone victory came during a sectional game in 2020. Following the clash with North Miami, Caston will face Pioneer, a matchup that promises to test their mettle further.
During the game against North White, the Comets established dominance early, leading 26-0 at halftime. Their only offensive setback occurred on their first passing attempt, which resulted in an interception. With just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter, a running clock was implemented, underscoring their control over the game.
Landen Rigney was a standout performer, leading the rushing attack with 78 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, complemented by a 34-yard reception. His return from two major injuries on the same leg has been a remarkable story for the team. Ashton Bowyer contributed significantly with 58 yards rushing on 10 carries and two touchdowns, while Tucker Woolever added 47 yards and a touchdown on five carries. London Herd also made an impact with 45 yards and a touchdown, despite a shoe mishap that cost him some yardage.
Quarterback Logan Mollenkopf completed 1 of 2 passes for 34 yards and added a rushing touchdown to his tally. Braxton Enyart, who had previously showcased his skills with a punt return touchdown, contributed 29 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Coach Ulerick praised the offensive efficiency, a pleasant surprise for the team, stating, “Offensively we’re efficient.” He acknowledged the need for the team to work on gaining tough yards as the competition intensifies.
This 2-0 start is the first for Caston since they opened the 2009 season with victories over Triton and West Central. Ulerick credited the players for their hard work, saying, “It’s been a while... The kids put in the work. The kids deserve all the credit.”
A key factor in the Comets' success has been their size advantage in the trenches, which has allowed their offensive and defensive lines to dominate. Ulerick noted, “Without our line we’re not much of anything. But that’s really been the difference in the first two ballgames.”
Defensively, the Comets were equally impressive, holding the Vikings to zero first downs and negative-23 yards in the first half. Even in the second half, North White struggled to gain traction, managing only five positive yards throughout the game. Ulerick remarked on the defensive performance, stating, “Defense is playing well.”
With a roster that allows for depth and rotation, the Comets are well-positioned for the challenges ahead. Ulerick highlighted the benefits of having a larger squad, stating, “We can get kids in and out of the game and keep some of our other kids fresh.” This depth will be crucial as they prepare for tougher opponents in the coming weeks.
